  1. Step 1: Add detergent and Hot Water
Get your bottle of detergent /shampoo or liquid soap and squirt a generous amount into the toilet bowl.

Follow that with a bucket of very hot water from the hot tap (not boiling).
Fill the toilet full but not overflowing.

NEVER USE BOILING WATER – The reasons you should not use boiling water to unclog a toilet is because:

  • BOILING WATER CAN DAMAGE PVC DRAIN PIPES AND RUBBER SEALS AT THESE PIPE JOINTS
  • WAX SEALANT RINGS AT THE BASE OF TOILET BOWLS CAN MELT AND ALLOW TOILET BOWLS TO LEAK
  • TOILETS ARE MADE OF CERAMICS WHICH HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO CRACK FROM THE EXTREME’S IN TEMPERATURE (COLD MAINS WATER TO BOILING HOT WATER).

  • Just use hot water from the tap. Fill up the toilet bowl with the hot water up to below the rim should be sufficient to mix with the shampoo / detergent. Leave to work for 10 minutes or so.

2.Step 2: Return and check the level of water in the toilet bowl

After a few minutes the water level will have lowered.
If nothing has happened wait 10 minutes more. If still nothing has happened you will probably need to bail some of the water out and add more hot water/ soap. ( The Hot water helps break up toilet paper quicker and the detergent soap helps lubricates the passage of solid material).

After 10 minutes –
If the water level is lower than before add more soap and more hot water (hot water does not need to be as hot as the first time as this time there is less water in the toilet to heat up).
Again wait for water to drain. This process should be now be quicker as the hot water has begun to break up the block and the soap is helping to carry away the blocked materials.
Repeat the process until water flows freely.

3.Step 3 : Done – Toilet unblocked!
If this simple toilet unclog trick or plunger unblocking has worked your toilet will be flushing and draining the bowl normally. Freshen the bowl with some ‘Drain duck’ or bleach cleaning product & if your family and guests aren’t aware you’ve had a clogged up toilet – Tell them of your ‘no plumber’ DIY fix while warning them to treat your bathroom with respect and not to put half an Andrex factory down the toilet every time they flush!!!

If step 3 hasn’t worked, the clog won’t budge despite repeated attempts to unblock – here are options:
A – If you’re a DIY plumber with a few hours to spare you an pull up the toilet. This involves isolation of the water supply, some disassembly of the toilet and cistern, remove the toilet bowl from the mounting ring & then you may be able to get at the problem
B – spend a small fortune at the local builders providers / DIY merchants on drain snakes and other implements and hope they perform as advertised and that the blockage is within reach of the chosen tool.
